March (03/02/2004)

Every moment that passes tells me that spring is coming:
The cherry blossoms are about to bloom.
But no matter how many times the sun shows its face over the clouds,
The rain is still on its way,
About to kiss my cheeks again.

What must I do to calm this uneasy mind,
This stirring heart that beats as if tomorrow may never come,
Like a hummingbird sipping its very last nectar drop
From a lone flower within a secret garden?
How long will this garden remain hidden,
Left unseen by naked eyes;
What sense is its beauty when towered by fifteen feet walls that surround it--
Cold, dark, and shadowed even at the heat of this coming spring?

"Someday, my prince will come,"
Snow White had said, but I'm no Disney princess,
Perhaps Mulan instead,
Not a sword,
In my fingers I wield a powerful pen to create more damage;
In my mind lies a world unchartered, unspoken, unrevealed;
In my lips, no.. these lips would rather kiss than dismiss;
But in my heart, my soul struggles to break free,
Just like a caged bird waiting to flap its wings,
And feel the evening breeze against its feathers.

Why must my body be logically free,
Yet my mind and heart is bounded by this society--
This that chains my legs to ideological entities, the color of my skin, or the structure of my body?
"Have I no shame to my family,
My ethnicity,
My gender,
Inequality?"
Moreso shouldn't I just be responsible for myself and my mentality?

It's sad to think that the world may have no hope,
When there is no change because people ignore it.
"To see a miracle, you must first be one."
I strive to be....
I want to change the system,
A ripple to inspire change.
I want not the first breath I take every morning
Be the only miracle in my life,
Aspire for more, yearn for that selfless feeling,
Smile even when it's absolutely unnecessary.

Be still
My racing heart and troubled mind:
There is more to life than getting by,
There is more to life than the grades you earn,
The quantity of friends,
The food you taste as the morsel lingers on your tongue.

There is more to life than the warmth you aspire
When your love is near, when he's really not,
When your heart skips a beat at the thought of his strong chin,
Or the look in his eyes when you think of them in your sleep;
There is more to life than wanting to share
Every minute, every part of you, every breath you take with him,
When he's not around...
There is more,
Always there is yourself.

When life is tough, keep smiling;
When it begins to rain, keep shining;
When there is no sign of hope,
Keep reminding yourself that spring is coming.
